It is with great joy and honor that I congratulate all athletes who participated in the 2017 USAT New York State Taekwondo Championships and National Qualifier! This year’s participants will be qualified to compete at the 2017 USAT National Championships in Detroit, Michigan. We continue our tradition every year in qualifying both new and old competitors to the prestigious national championships. With the new World Taekwondo Federation rules in effect at this year’s state championships, competition proved to be more exciting and action packed.
Thank you to all distinguished referees and officials for working at the event. USAT Head Referee Chairman Master Seung Hwan Kim did a fantastic job as our New York State Referee Chairman, flying in from Georgia to officiate despite his busy schedule. Our referee seminar was a huge success, certifying new referees and re-educating our current referees every year. Our event started at 8:30am with the national anthem, followed by the opening speech and award ceremonies. Our event finished at record breaking 3:30pm time, running 10 qualified rings. Master Mohammed Elshikh did a fantastic job assisting our state championships as our Daedo Ring Technician for the day.
This year, our Federation supported a hard working and dedicated International Referee who has been working for our state for so many years. IR International Referee Master Juan Suarez received a check from the state to support him towards his international referee training in Mexico and stronger development of referees in the state of New York.
Supporting the Olympic Dream
Every year since establishment, the New York State Taekwondo Federation has been financially supporting athletes on their Olympic Dream. In 2012, our federation made a $10,000 donation to the 2012 US Olympic Taekwondo Team. Along the way, we have supported many top athletes from the state of New York through our federation. One of our state missions is to support our grassroots and developmental athletes, and provide assistance in their training towards their goal of becoming an Olympic Champion. The journey is long, but graspable. The athletes take much of their time training, that it is very difficult to be financially capable of participating in various events.
New York State Taekwondo Federation Scholarship Requirement is as followed: 15-17 Junior or 17-32 Senior Black Belt Sparring athletes who qualified/participated at our USAT New York State Championships AND medaled at USAT National Championships or made the National Team Trials. Online scholarship application must be filled out and sent to our email to be reviewed by our committee members. Following review, athletes are chosen for scholarship.
The following athletes received scholarships checks at the State Championships this past weekend:
Planning Ahead for USAT National Championships in Detroit
As the National Championships slowly approaches, it is important that all distinguished Masters and Coaches continue to train your athletes hard and prepare them to represent the State of New York at Detroit, Michigan. Prior to the USAT National Championships, our Federation will be having both State Sparring and Poomsae Rumbles to help prepare our state athletes for Nationals. We will be bringing some of the best instructors from both our country and outside, giving the most up to date advancements to be on top of other competition.
On behalf of the New York State Taekwondo Federation, I ask that all athletes along with coaches never forget the five tenets of Taekwondo and continue to share our love for the sport in a positively influential way. Our federation will continue to share the good of Taekwondo to the community and build the next generation of Taekwondo athletes in the United States of America. Keep training hard and look forward to seeing you all soon in preparation for the National Championships in Detroit, Michigan.
With Taekwondo Spirit,
Grandmaster Sang K. Oh
